In 1936, as the fascists gained power in Europe, many Americans looked on at the fascists with awe, aided by the pro-fascist rhetoric of the Ku Klux Klan and speakers such as Father Charles Coughlin. Huey Long was almost assassinated in 1935, but his bodyguards, knowing that Long was a potential assassination target, were able to prevent the attack from happening.
Long became increasingly supportive of fascism and worked with Couglin more to promote it to the American public, who were quite supportive of it, the country being in a depression and the public being disillusioned with capitalism as was practiced under presidents like Hoover but also wary of the Soviet-style socialism. For the 1936 election, they created an entirely new party called the National Progressive Party and selected a populist labor organizer named Oliver Birch to be its presidential candidate.
The National Progressive Party won the presidency by a few hundred thousand votes and gained 30 seats in the House and 10 seats in the Senate. Many Southern Democrats also aligned with the National Progressives and eventually changed the United States of America to the American Corporate Confederacy and changed the flag, coat of arms, and seal as well.
